Web Philosophy

Our philosophy of web design is this: KEEP IT SIMPLE, READABLE, EASY TO NAVIGATE.

A web page should not cause headaches or eyestrain.  It should be easy to figure out what information is available and how to get there.  A visitor should never be left hanging on a page without a simple way back (other than the "back" button on the menu bar).

The majority of internet users still do not have cable or DSL therefore, we design our sites to load quickly.  There is nothing we hate more as net users than waiting around for a page to appear on the screen.  There aren't enough hours in the day for us to hang out for exploding images or dancing text.

Continuous animation has its uses but should not be so distracting as to send the visitor swearing from the site.  Backgrounds should be simple and allow the text to stand out and be clearly visible.

Ease and fluency of navigation is essential to a happy site visitor experience.  Visitors to a site must be able to effortlessly get from page to page and from one subject to the next.  Navigation buttons or text  must be on all major pages.

According to web surveys, the majority of web viewers are still using 15 or 17 inch monitors.  Therefore, we design our sites to fit a standard 17 inch screen, that is a 800 x 600 pixel dimension. (That is an image that fits on the screen and does not require the viewer to scroll from side to side).

A web site design should reflect how the author or business wants to be seen by the outside world.  For instance, a writer of hard-boiled/noir should have a stark site that fits with the subject while a cozy writer should have softer, lighter images that fit with the books' themes.  A sculptor and artist wants the art to be the focus, not the web design.

Here's an example of simple animation that won't send a viewer rushing for the mouse:
